Learning about Birch Trees

On our Field Experience to Fish Creek Park we learned about the Birch Tree. We learned that the white powder on the bark of the tree acts as sun protection for the tree. Today we listened to a Blackfoot Legend about Old Man and the Ol'Birch tree, this legend explained to us where the birch got its unusual markings from. Ms. V (our student teacher) led us in a tape and water colour exploration creating striking paintings that display the interesting markings of the Birch Tree.

We are learning:
-art concepts and exploring with different mediums and materials
-fine motor skills (tearing the tape)
-literacy skills and story telling
-scientific concepts such as the salt reacting with the water colour and about the white powder found on the bark of the tree
