Pumpkin Math

Today in room 10 we explored mathematic concepts such as counting by 2's, circumference and height by using our pumpkins. We also conducted a  experiment asking if we think pumpkins float or sink. Most of use predicted that they would sink because they are heavy. Here is what we discovered!

What we worked on:
-skip counting
-circumference
-measurement
-observational skills
-experimental process
-literacy skills

Jokes!

Thank you to Elise for doing an amazing job as our very first VIP. Today she brought items to estimate and skip count by two and some jokes that the class has been enjoying.

Why do M&M's go to school?
-They want to be smarties!

What music are balloons scared of?
-Pop music!

Next week we look forward to Learning all about Logan A., our next VIP!

Remember tomorrow is a PD Day.

VIP

This week we have started our VIP time. This gives each student the opportunity to teach the class about themselves. This week Elise has been our VIP and she has shared many photos and other things about herself. When it is your child's week to be VIP you can expect:
Monday: Poster all about them, with photos or drawn pictures
Tuesday: Favorite Book
Wednesday: Artifact from home
Thursday: Estimation bad (bag full on small objects like LEGO or hair ties) that the class can estimate and then count.
Friday: either joke or science experiment/discovery

If it is a short week then the student will combine either Monday and Tuesday or Thursday and Friday's VIP task.

Thank you for participating and stay tuned for your child's week!

National Take Me Outside Day

Because today is National Take Me Outside day room 10 decided to head outside to our outdoor classroom to work on number sense. Our number for today was 15  (we have been practicing counting by 5's). Students were asked to represent the number 15 in a variety of different ways using only found objects.

Bridge Challenge

Many of the students were interested in the bridges that we noticed yesterday on our Weaselhead Field Study. Today our challenge was: Can you build a bridge that spans the length of one yellow ruler (30 cm) and can hold at least three of our toy animals? Constraint being you can only use Q-tips, tape, chairs and tables.

We are working on:
-non-standard measurement
-problem solving
-collaborating
-shapes and space
-building skills
-growth mindset
-working with prototypes

Weaselhead

Grade 1's spent a beautiful morning exploring Weaselhead Flats this morning. We were looking for signs of animals and humans. We had the opportunity to explore nature and use our scientific sketching skills in a natural setting. We look forward to visiting in the spring for a full day and working with the Weaselhead teachers to learn more about the area and animals who call it home.

Stuffy Party!

Room 10 students arrived to a big surprise this morning. Last night our stuffies decided to have a party in our classroom! We found them having a tea party, zip lining, leaving us messages with letter tiles and on the white boards, reading books, playing board games and practicing their flying skills. We made comic strips about all the shenanigans they got into.

*Reminder: Monday is our rescheduled field study to Weaselhead Park. We will be attending for the morning and back at the school for lunch. Please dress for the weather and wear proper walking shoes. There are a number of students that still need to return their forms, new ones where sent home today.
