Forest Games
Room 10 students have been exploring the outdoor space in front of our school. We have discovered that the little clumps of trees in the field are perfect for games such as "Capture the Flag". We have decided to make up our own games. We broke up into groups and brainstormed new games to play. We decided that our games had to include rules, instructions, number of players, a name and materials/equipment. We took turns presented our ideas and today we trailed the game "Taggers and Baggers". We discovered that we really liked how this game had a "hunt" aspect where we had to hunt for baby wolves (stuffies) that were hidden the in tress. We noticed that some people were "stealing" more then one stuffy at a time and taking it to their zone and that when someones tail was taken not everyone went to the "jail" which was part of the rules. One of our students suggested maybe we should create a Rule Book to help us all work together and remember the rules. After conversation amongst the class we have decided that we need to add to the rules that you can have only one "puppy" in your hand at a time and that when you go to jail after three students enter after you, you are free and then you see the tail person for a new tail!

Yoga
Room 10 has been participating in our Yoga residency this week.
"Children derive enormous benefits from yoga. Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improves. Doing yoga, children exercise, play, connect more deeply with the inner self, and develop an intimate relationship with the natural world that surrounds them. Yoga brings that marvelous inner light that all children have to the surface." MARSHA WENIG

Morning Math
Special reminder: Friday's Assembly will be held at 11am in the Gymnasium, and celebrates the learning that our grade 1s have been doing.
Please dress up as a Community Helper for our assembly, if you want to and if you can. A Community Helper is someone who helps our community, like: A Police Officer, a Waste Collector, a Farmer, a Store Owner, a Doctor, or anyone else you can think of.
See you on Friday!

This week we started math centers as the first thing we do when we come into our classroom in the morning. We can choose between 4 different stations.
One station is for matching words, numbers, and dots together.
Another tests our addition by asking us "If I want to make 15 on a calculator, but the number 5 is broken, how else can I make it?" and similar questions.
One helps test or addition by using clothespins to count on a playing card.
And our last station gets us sketching Ten Frames so we can practice looking at groups of 5 and 10.
This has been a great way to warm up our brains in the morning, and get ready for more learning throughout the day.

Austin's Butterfly
This week we started a Writer's Workshop for creating our own stories which we will add to our classroom library.
The process of Writer's Workshop is:
The process of Writer's Workshop is:
- Story Map
- First Draft
- Editing
- Publishing
- Share
As part of step 3, editing, we are learning about giving feedback to our peers, and implementing the feedback we collect.
Today's activity was based on a video called "Austin's Butterfly" (watch it on youtube!), in which a student uses peer feedback to create and improve many drafts of a butterfly sketch.
We practiced searching on iPads, finding a good photo, and then began sketching. After asking a peer for feedback, we started work on our next drafts. Soon, we will have some beautiful butterfly designs to turn into Final Copies.
Reminders for upcoming events:
- Our assembly is next Friday, April 12 at 11am, our students can dress up as a community helper (doctor, police officer, gardener, mail deliverer, student, etc)
- Field-trip to Weasel Head on April 23
- Field-trip Downtown on May 27
- We are still welcoming volunteers for both of these field-trips

Badminton and Story Writing
Today we started our badminton unit in physical education. We are working on hand eye-ordinations, ball skills, using equipment and body control. We enjoyed practicing these skills outdoors in the fresh air!
Writer's Workshop: Room 10 is beginning writer's workshop. Today we worked on our story maps which include Characters, setting, problem and beginning, middle and end. The next step in the process is draft one, then editing, then revising, then illustrations and finally publishing.
